My client are recruiting for an exciting opportunity to join their legal team in a Planning Lawyer role. This will be a busy and fast paced position requiring a candidate with at least 2 years post qualification experience. The successful candidate must be an admitted Solicitor, Barrister or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives. It is essential that candidates applying to this role have detailed knowledge and experience of law and practice relating to planning legal work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead on all aspects of the organisations planning legal work.
  • To have conduct of cases in all Courts, Tribunals etc., to appear personally on the organisations behalf in all Civil and Criminal Courts and before Tribunals, Inquiries and Committees etc.
  • Liaise with and advise any departments that instruct the Planning & Corporate Team in relation to planning legal work.
  • Prepare casework for submission at Magistrates Court, Crown Court and the High Court and other bodies, negotiate settlements where appropriate and advocate matters .
  • Advise upon, draft and approve Reports.
  • Instruct Counsel and other experts, as required.
  • Keep clients informed of new legislation and case law relevant to their operations to ensure that they maintain a sound appreciation of legal requirements.
  • Advise upon the development and implementation of policy and the interpretation of relevant legislation and case law and for this purpose maintain an up to date knowledge of the law.
  • To provide training to the Members and client departments served by the Planning & Corporate Legal Team.
  • On own initiative to investigate, research and report upon matters of importance within Planning
  • Assist in development and maintaining effective office practice, systems and procedures (including contributing to best value, Lexcel and the use of new and emerging technology) in order to increase efficiency, improve quality standards and contribute to the provision of relevant management information.

Key Requirements:

  • Knowledge of planning legal work.
  • Detailed knowledge of the Civil and Criminal Court Procedures.
  • Knowledge of recent relevant legislation and Government proposals.
  • Good communication skills both oral and written and the ability to explain issues clearly, objectively and in a personable manner.
  • Advocacy skills.
  • Ability to co-ordinate and manage a substantial, often complex, caseload.
  • Ability to write and draft detailed and complex documents.
  • Ability to work to deadlines, attend evening meetings as required, attend courts and tribunals, offering a flexible approach with regard to working arrangements where appropriate.
