My client is a solutions provider and systems integrator operating in the defence and aerospace markets delivering to international clients.


The Commercial function is responsible for both domestic and international Commercial management supporting business winning and managing contracts through life so that they achieve the best business results.


The Senior Estimator will work as part of the Commercial Department reporting to the Commercial Director providing support to all the business units within the Command and Sonar Systems business. Working closely with the Projects, Sales, and Marketing, Procurement and Engineering teams. The Senior Estimator is responsible for:

  • Ensuring the coordination and preparation of estimates to support the business, and in particular large and complex projects.
  • Compilation and maintenance of a pricing library of products and systems to enable expeditious production of bids and information proposals (RFls, ROMs etc).
  • The estimating process is a coordination of expert inputs from all functions across the business (e.g. Engineering, Production, Procurement, Project Management) resulting in a sound cost basis to produce a winning price proposal.

The Senior Estimator role is to support the Bid Team through experience, and challenge, ensuring the cost basis is supported with clear rationale.
As well as specific bids, a key requirement is to develop a pricing library for products and systems to enable the production of bids under short time scales. Maintenance of the library, induding timely updates and comparisons to recent actuals is crucial.
The role will involve coordinating estimating input from all areas of the Company thus ensuring that all cost and pricing inputs are based on sound estimating practices and/or actuals.

Responsibilities are:

  • Ensuring estimating inputs for all areas.
  • Review of estimating inputs against benchmark information (e.g. past actuals, similar alternatives etc), and challenging providers (both re under and over estimates)
  • Validation of estimate inputs (e.g. quoted, based upon sound logic or recent actuals etc).
    - Specifying and agreeing a pricing library for standard production parts / systems.
    - Population and validation of the pricing library.
    - Ongoing maintenance of the pricing library.


Accountability's are:

Timely completion of signed off cost books, in particular complex/ high value (>£5M) proposals. Development and maintenance 01 the pricing library.

Duties/Tasks:

  • Act as lead estimator in coordinating and producing detailed cost estimates that fulfil customer requirements.
    - Ensure estimates are developed, reviewed and submitted on time.
    - Review, support and challenge information breakdown including NRE, materials, labour, contingencies, and provenance of estimates etc.
    - Highlight any risks.
    - Act as the lead _owner_ of the Pricing Library ensuring it is maintained current.
