Our client based in Henfield is seeking a Health & Safety Advisor to join their team.
In this role you would support the business as a competent H&S advisor by maintaining practical, compliant safe systems of work; carrying out risk assessments, inspections and investigations; delivering H&S training and communications; and ensuring actions are closed out to continually improve performance.
- Act as a competent point of contact for H&S matters across all locations; promote a positive, safety culture.
- Maintain awareness of relevant UK H&S legislation and best practice; support the SHEQ Manager to identify gaps and implement improvements.
- Carry out regular site inspections / safety tours; record findings, agree corrective actions with managers, and follow through to completion.
- Complete and review risk assessments, COSHH assessments and safe systems of work; ensure they are practical and used in day-to-day operations.
- Support incident / near miss investigations (including root cause analysis); produce clear written reports and recommend corrective and preventive actions.
- Deliver and coordinate H&S inductions, toolbox talks and briefings; develop clear training materials suited to factory and office colleagues.
- Support emergency preparedness (e.g., procedures, drills, fire and evacuation exercises) and document outcomes and actions.
- Maintain H&S records and performance data (e.g., inspections, actions, training, incidents) and provide updates for management reporting.
- Work closely with Production, Maintenance and other teams to improve safe working methods and equipment safety.Support any additional reasonable H&S tasks and projects as required by the business.
Experience
- Proven experience in a Health & Safety advisory role within a manufacturing / operational environment.
- Experience conducting risk assessments, COSHH assessments, inspections and incident investigations with clear written reporting.
- Experience delivering H&S inductions, toolbox talks and practical training to workforces (factory and office).
- Confidence working with leaders and supervisors to influence safe behaviours and drive action closure.
Desirable:
- Explicit woodworking risk management (LEV, wood dust, DSEAR).
- Fire safety governance (Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005).
- Contractor & permit-to-work systems.
- Health surveillance programme coordination.
- ISO 45001 internal auditing.
Key Skills and Qualifications: - NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent) - essential; working towards NEBOSH Diploma - desirable.
- IOSH Managing Safely - desirable.
- Strong working knowledge of UK H&S legislation (e.g., HASAWA, Management Regs, PUWER, LOLER, COSHH, Fire Safety).
- Excellent communication skills: able to explain requirements in plain language and build rapport across all staff levels.
- Ability to make sound, real-time safety decisions and escalate appropriately.
- Organised and detail-focused with strong follow-up to ensure actions are completed.
- Competent in Microsoft Office; able to maintain logs, reports and basic performance dashboards.
