The post holder will be responsible for providing expert support and delivery of compliance services to support the Council and its partners in adhering to its responsibilities as a data handler and processor.
The Redaction Officer will work closely with the Data Protection team to ensure that information to be released to requestors will not place the Council at risk of data breaches, by checking that any unpermitted data is redacted from any responses.
The post will sit within the Information Management service to ensure that all relevant legislation is considered, as well as any risks to other parties named within the Subject Access Request prior to the release of any data.
Main Responsibilities and Duties: - Work in compliance with the Council’s legal duties in relation to data management and information governance, with a strong focus on redaction.
- Undertake a review of information as appropriate to ensure any irrelevant or inappropriate date is redacted as required, whilst ensuring data protection legislation is not breached.
- Liaising with the Senior Data Protection Officer on open cases and other agencies and professionals as required to ensure any information to be provided is obtained, checked, redacted and handled sensitively to protect the privacy of those concerned.
- Keeping the Senior Data Protection Officer updated with any areas of concern or uncertainty to ensure appropriate advice can be obtained to assist with decision making.
- Providing accurate advice, guidance and empathetic support to requestors, ensuring this complies with the DPA, and supporting legislation.
- Notify the Senior Data Protection Officer of any data breaches as required to ensure the data subject can be notified.
- Keeping up to date with evolving legislation, Codes of Practice, national and international standards and government agendas in relation to the management of information requests.
- Maintain records and assist with data processing audits, as may be required by the Senior Data Protection Officer or Data Protection Manager.• Any other tasks which may be required on an ad hoc basis.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience (Job Specific Examples Essential - Desirable Knowledge and understanding of data protection, records management, Subject Access Requests and some knowledge of freedom of information
- The post holder will be required to demonstrate their ability to act in accordance with the Council’s data protection requirements
- Have a working knowledge of the Children Act and Childcare legislation
- The post holder will need to have an awareness of what information can be shared in accordance with appropriate legislation, and to be able to identify any risk to a child in sharing such information
- Good organisational and time management skills and the ability to multi-task and work on own initiative with minimal supervision
- The post holder will need to prioritise and organise their workload to accommodate the legislative timeframes for response to Subject Access Requests
- Good knowledge and experience of MS Office products, including the use of templates and macros
- The post holder will regularly be required to use MS Office programmes
- Ability to build effective relationships with colleagues and a commitment to teamwork
- The post holder will work as part of a team and will be able to demonstrate they are a team player by supporting and assisting colleagues as required
Qualifications Essential
- Formal Data Protection qualification
- Where the role is customer-facing and the post holder is required to speak to members of the public, the ability to converse at ease with customers and provide advice
- Spoken English is essential for the post.
